Peak in the White Mountains
"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."
-Anne of Green Gables
I decided to take a spontaneous trip home for the long weekend, and it just happened to be peak foliage up north. It really doesn't get any better than this. Anywhere.
The entire ride home, I was behind leaf-peepers from across the country and Canada. I haven't been home to see peak in 7 years, and seemed to forget how much traffic it involved. But, how breathtaking it is.
Anouk still sleeps the entire trip. But the minute we arrive, she knows exactly where she is.
We went for a morning stroll through the leaves at first light. The air was crisp and still. For my photo friends out there, this diffuse light is too good to pass up... am I right? And to get photos like this, I have to lie in the frosty grass in my L.L. Bean robe just to get in the right position. Anouk thinks I'm playing and tackles me into the leaves. It's a continuous cycle. However once in a great while of a million photos, you get Anouk to stay and for the camera to focus and its golden.
We don't have super close neighbors, but if we did, my acrobatics in my robe would be quite a show. Happy autumn, neighbor.
It wouldn't be a complete trip home without a visit to see Lexsy. She was waiting for us when we arrived, and the two were reunited again.
It makes me happy to see these two together. Anouk doesn't like other dogs very much, so having a friend like Lexsy is a big deal for us. It's pretty hard not to get along with Lexsy, I mean, look at how friendly she is.
We took a walk down to the boat landing where the girls usually stop for a drink, and Anouk surprised us all. She started running around in the water like a maniac! Since Anouk's surgery, I've been extremely hesitant to see her in the water again, since this is where she would have her episodes of knee issues. She didn't have a single problem today, and it was just wonderful. It's been a LONG recovery for us, and I'm already looking forward to next summer when we can really enjoy the water.
We had a great weekend up north, and definitely looking forward to our next visit! Autumn is a spectacular sight to behold, yet sneaks away silently like the hours in a day that you don't want to end. Before you know it, the leaves begin to fall ferociously, and inevitably. Though it may come and go, acknowledge its beauty. Acknowledge its splendor. It comes just once a year purposefully.
Much love,
Shannon + Anouk
Happy Autumn!
